Deputy Editor (Sports Media/PR/Broadcasting)

We have a highly demanding, rapidly growing website that places a focus on quality long-form content. We are looking to fill a senior management position to assist the editor in chief and the deputy editor in overseeing the growth of the site in all areas, though primarily ensuring clear communication between the separate departments, assisting with idea generation, editing high level copy, managing a growing staff and acting as the trusted voice of deputy editor when that individual is traveling and/or not available. The individual will report directly to the deputy editor.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting in the management of a growing staff of editorial employees who have skillsets across a wide range of disciplines.
  • Managing a stable of high quality, potentially demanding freelance writers and on air talent, ensuring they file on time and produce content regularly.
  • Working with the Deputy Editor to program the website, ensure quality of content and work on content posting schedules.
  • Interacting with the home office in Bristol in a wide variety of ways, including working with the legal department on contracts and potential problems; maintaining the standards and practices of our company; reporting to the editor in chief and other executives on our website and keeping them abreast of developments, potential conflicts and upcoming content; assisting in the management of the relationship between our two website's; and, generally, have the ability to perform all duties with relationship to our company that the Deputy Editor undertakes at the moment.
  • Planning special projects, coverage packages, and moments for major events.
  • Editing and top edit both blogs on the site (Hollywood Prospectus and the Triangle) and provide coverage for the editors of those blogs if they are traveling or otherwise unavailable.
  • Managing the internship program
  • Generally performing any tasks that the deputy editor might undertake on a daily basis.

    Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of editorial experience as an editor of glossy magazine caliber content
  • Has outstanding communication skills, and experience working in a cross-functional team
  • Has excellent ability in writing, editing and reporting
  • Has excellent understanding of some or all major sports, as well as a working knowledge of athletes, coaches, league operations and trends in sports
  • Has basic appreciation and knowledge of popular culture
  • Has basic understanding of the market positioning and strategies of digital content delivery
  • Has basic news journalism experience and news judgment; understands sports and coverage from a journalistic point of view
  • Has understanding of HTML and related Web-authoring tools and software
  • Has strong English grammar and excellent organizational skills
  • Has familiarity with major Internet search engines and fluency in electronic newsgathering techniques, including quickly navigating the Internet
